ICE Arrests Brazilian National in Massachusetts on Charges of Attempted Murder and Other Crimes
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has made headlines once again with the arrest of a Brazilian national in Massachusetts who is in the country illegally and facing serious charges, including attempted murder.
Evandro Ribeiro-Rosa, 33, was apprehended by Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Boston in Worcester District Court on August 12. The arrest came after Ribeiro-Rosa was initially taken into custody by the Worcester Police Department on July 16 for a string of violent offenses, including attempted murder, stalking, intimidation, kidnapping, and vandalizing property.
“Evandro Ribeiro-Rosa allegedly committed a number of violent crimes against a member of our Massachusetts community,” said ERO Boston Field Office Director Todd M. Lyons. “We will not allow noncitizen criminals to repeatedly victimize our neighborhoods.”
Ribeiro-Rosa first entered the U.S. unlawfully near Nogales, Arizona, in September 2021. He was arrested by Border Patrol officials and served with a notice to appear before a Department of Justice immigration judge before being released.
Despite being arrested by Worcester Police last month, Ribeiro-Rosa was released from the Worcester House of Corrections on July 23 after posting bail, as the detention facility failed to honor the immigration detainer filed by ERO.
However, Ribeiro-Rosa’s run-ins with the law did not end there. He was arrested again on August 8 by Worcester Police for failing to appear in court, leading ERO Boston to file another detainer against him. He was ultimately taken into custody by deportation officers on August 12 in Worcester District Court.
According to ICE, Ribeiro-Rosa remains in ERO custody as the court surrendered custody of him due to the active immigration detainer.
“ERO Boston will continue to prioritize public safety by arresting and removing egregious noncitizen offenders from New England,” ICE stated.
The case of Evandro Ribeiro-Rosa serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in dealing with individuals who commit serious crimes while in the country illegally.
