Chairman of the House Oversight Committee, James Comer, penned a letter to FBI Director Christopher Wray, notifying the bureau of the committee’s investigation into Walz. The committee has been briefed by the FBI on two occasions before Walz was named as Harris’ running mate, where FBI briefers mentioned that the bureau’s Foreign Influence Task Force investigates activities similar to those that have come to light about Governor Walz.
Comer is seeking information about the Chinese entities and officials that Walz has engaged with, as well as any warnings or advice the FBI may have given to Walz regarding CCP influence operations. The committee is concerned about Walz’s connections to CCP-connected entities and officials, which could make him susceptible to the CCP’s strategy of elite capture.
Reports suggest that Walz has extensive engagement with CCP officials and entities while serving in public office, raising questions about possible CCP influence in his decision-making as governor and potentially as vice president if elected. Walz has traveled to China an estimated 30 times and has been involved in various activities with Chinese entities.
Comer highlighted Walz’s time in Congress, where he served as a fellow at the Macau Polytechnic University, a Chinese institution known for its devotion to the motherland. Walz has also spoken at events alongside Chinese officials, despite knowledge of China’s human rights violations.
The committee is now requesting assistance from the FBI in the investigation, asking for documents and information related to Walz’s engagement with Chinese entities and individuals. Comer emphasized the importance of understanding the depth of Walz’s relationship with China, especially considering the CCP’s efforts to influence American officials.
