Tragedy struck in Delhi as at least six newborn babies lost their lives in a devastating fire that broke out at a hospital in the Vivek Vihar region. The blaze, which started late on Saturday evening, engulfed the entire building, leaving a total of seven infants dead.
According to senior police officer Surendra Choudhary, there were 12 babies in the unit at the time of the fire, with one already deceased before the incident. Shockingly, the owner of the hospital had fled the scene, prompting authorities to take legal action against them.
Dramatic images shared on social media captured the intensity of the fire, with several bursts of flames visible as it spread rapidly. Delhi’s Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal expressed his sorrow, calling the incident “heartbreaking” and promising that those responsible for negligence would face consequences.
The director of Delhi’s fire department, Atul Garg, revealed that 14 fire trucks were dispatched to combat the blaze, which was exacerbated by a blast in an oxygen cylinder. Rescue efforts were hindered by limited access to the building, as it lacked proper fire escapes and had only one staircase.
This tragic event comes on the heels of another deadly fire in Rajkot, Gujarat, where a games arcade was engulfed in flames, claiming the lives of at least 27 people, many of whom were children. The cause of the fire was attributed to a short circuit, resulting in the complete destruction of the two-storey building.
As authorities continue to investigate these incidents, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and local officials have expressed their condolences and pledged to ensure that safety regulations are strictly enforced to prevent such tragedies in the future. The communities affected by these fires are left mourning the loss of loved ones, awaiting closure through DNA testing and recovery efforts.
