A Georgia couple has been sentenced to a year and a half in prison after being convicted of repeatedly abusing their 8-week-old son. Tarilyn Allie Lester Alexander and Joseph Tyler Alexander were found guilty of eight counts of aggravated battery and four counts of first-degree cruelty to children.
The baby suffered horrific abuse, with evidence showing bruising on his face and genitals, broken blood vessels in his eyes, and a total of 11 broken bones and hemorrhages in both eyes by the time he was just 8 weeks old. Doctors diagnosed the baby with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, but experts testified that this illness does not cause the severe injuries the baby had sustained.
Despite being unable to explain the injuries when questioned, the Alexanders were convicted on 12 of 16 counts. They were sentenced to prison time and probation, with the possibility of having contact with their son upon release.
This heartbreaking case serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting the most vulnerable members of society and seeking justice for those who have been harmed.
