Playwright James Graham to Rewrite Play About England Manager Gareth Southgate Following Euro 2024 Journey
Nottinghamshire writer James Graham, known for his play about England manager Gareth Southgate, has announced that he will be rewriting the script to reflect the Three Lions’ Euro 2024 journey. Graham, originally from Mansfield, said he will be changing the ending of his play, Dear England, to include the drama following England’s defeat to Spain in the final.
Graham, who was also asked to write a two-minute montage for the BBC’s final coverage, described the last eight years of English football as “remarkable.” The play, which stars Joseph Fiennes as Gareth Southgate, will now be updated to incorporate the recent events of the Euro 2024 tournament.
In an interview with BBC Breakfast, Graham expressed his admiration for Southgate, calling him an “unlikely hero” who has transformed English football. Despite the disappointment of the recent defeat, Graham believes that Southgate’s leadership has set the team on a path towards success.
England’s 2-1 loss to Spain in the Euro 2024 final marked a bittersweet moment for fans, but Graham remains optimistic about the team’s future. He emphasized the importance of enjoying the journey of supporting the national team, rather than solely focusing on the end result.
As Southgate’s contract is set to expire in December, the future of English football remains uncertain. However, Graham’s portrayal of the manager as a quiet yet impactful leader reflects the sentiment of many fans who have been inspired by Southgate’s leadership.
