Former BBC North West Tonight presenter and firefighter, Beccy Barr, has passed away at the age of 46 after battling incurable abdominal cancer. Beccy, who worked for BBC North West Tonight from 2013 to 2019 before joining Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service, was remembered as a courageous and dedicated individual by her colleagues and friends.
Roger Johnson, presenter of BBC North West Tonight, praised Beccy for her bravery in facing her illness and for her decision to leave her successful TV career to become a firefighter. He described her as someone who wanted to make a difference and excelled in doing so.
Beccy’s colleagues at Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service also expressed their sadness at her passing, highlighting her professionalism, compassion, and warm personality. Beccy followed in her father’s footsteps by joining the fire service, where she served on Red Watch in Blackburn.
Tributes poured in for Beccy on social media, with Lancaster and Wyre MP Cat Smith praising her for making the world a better place with her enthusiasm and dedication. Chris Brindley, editor of BBC North West, remembered Beccy as a much-loved member of the team and an inspiration to all who knew her.
In addition to her career in journalism and firefighting, Beccy was also actively involved in the community as a Girlguiding leader and a participant in triathlons and long-distance athletic events. She leaves behind her beloved daughter, Hannah.
