A strong thunderstorm has wreaked havoc at Dolly Parton’s beloved theme park, Dollywood, in Tennessee, causing a flash flood that left visitors scrambling for safety.
Video footage captured the terrifying scene as fast-flowing water surged through the park, inundating rides and souvenir shops. In the car park, people were forced to wade through waist-high water to reach their partially submerged vehicles.
Fortunately, the park was quick to respond, directing guests to safety during the storm. However, one person did sustain a minor injury. Dollywood released a statement assuring that they are assisting guests whose vehicles were affected and deploying clean-up crews. The statement also mentioned that the park’s opening on Monday would depend on the assessment of conditions.
Despite the park’s efforts, some visitors took to social media to express their shock at the severity of the flooding and claimed they were not adequately guided to safety. One user recounted how patrons had to dismantle a fence to retrieve their vehicles after a fallen tree blocked the road.
Amidst the chaos, the spirit of Dollywood prevailed, with one user expressing their love for the park despite the harrowing experience. The popular attraction, known for its thrill rides, arts and crafts, food, and music, was founded by country music icon Dolly Parton in 1986.
This recent incident marks the second water-related problem for Dollywood this month, following a temporary closure due to a burst water main. As the park assesses the damage and plans for reopening, Knoxville Police issued a warning for heavy rain and potential flash flooding in the area, urging caution and reminding drivers to avoid flooded roads for their safety.
