New York City is set to welcome a new fire commissioner, as the CEO of a major security firm is expected to take over the role from the outgoing Laura Kavanagh. Kavanagh, the first female commissioner of the FDNY, announced her resignation last month amidst controversy surrounding a group of hecklers at a public event.
Robert Tucker, the CEO of T&M USA, is anticipated to be named as Kavanagh’s replacement by Mayor Eric Adams. Tucker, who already serves on the board of the FDNY Foundation, has been praised by FDNY Uniformed Firefighters Association President Andrew Ansbro for his deep ties to the department and dedication to the city’s firefighters.
Tucker’s background in security, particularly in high-rise buildings, as well as his experience in law enforcement, make him a qualified candidate for the position. He has previously been named an honorary fire commissioner and police commissioner in New York City.
The announcement of Tucker’s appointment is expected to be made at a news briefing at the city’s firefighter academy, where Mayor Adams will also make a public safety announcement. The change in leadership comes after a tumultuous period for the FDNY, marked by tensions between department members and Kavanagh’s handling of controversial incidents.
Despite not having served as a firefighter himself, Tucker’s leadership and executive experience in the private sector are seen as assets that will enable him to effectively address the challenges facing the FDNY. The transition to a new commissioner is hoped to bring stability and efficiency to the department, ultimately benefiting the city’s residents and first responders.
