Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi, known for their roles in Barbie and Saltburn, are set to star in a major new film adaptation of the classic novel Wuthering Heights. The Australian actors will take on the iconic roles of Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff in director Emerald Fennell’s upcoming project, which will be set on the tempestuous Yorkshire moors.
While the casting of these two Hollywood stars may seem like a dream come true for some, it has left many film fans feeling unimpressed. Critics have raised concerns about the age of the characters in the book, as well as the description of Heathcliff as “dark-skinned” in the novel written in 1847.
Despite the backlash, Fennell, who won an Oscar for her film Promising Young Woman, is moving forward with the project. Robbie, who is currently pregnant, will be both producing and acting in the film, which is set to begin shooting in the UK next year.
Little is known about how Fennell plans to adapt the story of turbulent and tragic romance, but she has teased fans with a gothic illustration and a quote from Heathcliff in the book. Some are eagerly anticipating the film, while others are skeptical about the direction Fennell will take.
Wuthering Heights has been adapted for the screen multiple times, with the last film coming out in 2011. This new adaptation is sure to bring a fresh perspective to the timeless tale of love and obsession on the Yorkshire moors.
