Renowned Designers Create Tranquil Retreat in Karuizawa, Japan

Karuizawa, often referred to as “Tokyo’s backyard,” is a picturesque resort town known for its natural hot springs and lush forests. It has attracted the likes of Bill Gates and John Lennon and Yoko Ono over the years, making it a popular destination for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life.

Among the latest generation of expats to settle in Karuizawa are architect Terence Ngan and interior designer Ed Ng, partners in life and work. The duo, known for their opulent designs in hotels across Asia and Europe, decided to make Karuizawa their permanent home during the pandemic.

During their time in lockdown, Ngan and Ng embarked on a unique project – creating a 10,000-square-foot, four-building complex that they call a “little village.” The design of the complex, inspired by the surrounding mountains, features cascading cedar-clad boxes with dramatic cantilevered balconies offering stunning views of the natural landscape.

The main house, with its spacious common areas and neutral color scheme, reflects a blend of Japanese and Hong Kong influences. The dwelling also includes a tatami mat room for sharing dessert and a hinoki tub on a terrace overlooking the property’s stone paths.

One of the standout features of the complex is a floating greenhouse built on four thin columns, blending seamlessly into the surrounding forest. Ngan and Ng plan to spend their winters hibernating in this unique space, enjoying the contrast between the lush greenery inside and the bare branches outside.

For the designers, the essence of living in Karuizawa lies in the beauty of the landscape and nature that surrounds them. As Ngan puts it, “The most essential part of living here is the landscape, the nature. That’s the purity of beauty.”

Their tranquil retreat in Karuizawa serves as a testament to their ability to create a serene and harmonious space, away from the glitz and glamour of their usual projects. It’s a place where they can truly unwind and appreciate the simplicity and beauty of their surroundings.
