Biniam Girmay: The Eritrean Cyclist Making History at the Tour de France

Biniam Girmay, known as the “African king” to his fans, has been making waves in the world of cycling. The 24-year-old Eritrean cyclist has become the first black African to win a Tour de France stage not once, but three times in a single year.

Despite his remarkable success, Girmay’s journey to the top has been filled with challenges. From battling culture shocks to navigating Europe’s visa procedures, he has faced obstacles that many can relate to. Being thousands of miles away from his wife and young daughter has added to the loneliness he has experienced.

However, Girmay’s achievements have not gone unnoticed. He has become a hero in his home country of Eritrea and an inspiration for cyclists across Africa. His success is seen as a catalyst for change in a sport that is predominantly white – in this year’s Tour de France, he is the only black rider among 176 competitors.

Born and raised in Eritrea, Girmay’s passion for cycling was sparked by his cousin, African champion Meron Teshome. His family’s involvement in the sport runs deep, with his younger brother also becoming a professional rider.

After being scouted by the UCI, Girmay left home at the age of 17 to train at the World Cycling Centre in Switzerland. The transition was tough, but he persevered and eventually signed with a French team, Delko. Despite setbacks like the team going bust and the challenges of securing visas, Girmay continued to chase his dream.

His hard work paid off when he made history by winning a one-day classic race at Gent-Wevelgem and a stage at the Giro d’ Italia. Girmay’s success has not only put Eritrea on the map in the world of cycling but has also inspired a new generation of riders across the continent.

As he continues to compete in prestigious races like the Tour de France and looks ahead to the Olympics and World Championships, Girmay remains a symbol of hope and determination for cyclists everywhere. His story is one of resilience, perseverance, and the power of chasing your dreams against all odds.
