Vice President Harris Accidentally Refers to Herself as “President” During Eulogy for Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee
Vice President Kamala Harris made a slip of the tongue during a memorial service for late Democrat Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, where she seemingly mixed up her own title while delivering Jackson Lee’s eulogy. The incident occurred as Harris was honoring Jackson Lee for her work in making Juneteenth a federal holiday.
“It was Sheila Jackson Lee whose bill made Juneteenth a federal holiday. Which, as a United States senator, I was proud to co-sponsor. And then as president – as vice president …” Harris said, quickly correcting herself.
Jackson Lee, who passed away on July 19 at the age of 74 after battling pancreatic cancer, was remembered by Harris as a “tenacious advocate for justice and a tireless fighter for the people of Houston and the people of America.” Harris also shared that she had spoken with Jackson Lee days before her death, expressing her gratitude for the impact the congresswoman had on her career.
During the service, Harris shared stories about Jackson Lee’s tough love and unwavering belief in the power to change the country for the better. Harris praised Jackson Lee as a “change maker” who worked tirelessly to uplift her city, state, and nation.
The slip-up by Vice President Harris added a moment of levity to the somber occasion, highlighting the close relationship between the two women and the impact Jackson Lee had on Harris’s life and career.
