House Minority Leader Criticizes Republicans Pushing to Impeach Homeland Security Secretary
Democratic House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., took to social media to criticize extreme MAGA Republicans who are pushing for the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. In a brief post, Jeffries slammed the move as a “phony political stunt” and told the Republicans to “get lost.”
The U.S. Senate is set to receive the House-passed articles of impeachment against Mayorkas next month, with House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., notifying Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., that the articles will be formally handed over on April 10. Johnson urged Schumer to hold the impeachment trial “expeditiously.”
In February, all but three House Republicans voted to impeach Mayorkas over his handling of the U.S. southern border, marking the first time since 1876 that a cabinet secretary had been impeached. Despite the impeachment trial being initiated in the Senate, it is highly unlikely to result in a conviction.
