Former New York Yankees star and World Series champion, David Wells, recently took to social media to express his outrage over a controversial memo issued by Veterans Affairs official RimaAnn Nelson. The memo, which called for the removal of the iconic V-J Day Times Square photograph from VA health care centers, sparked backlash from Republican lawmakers and veterans alike.
In his post on social media, Wells did not mince words, calling Nelson “a Disgusting Human Being” for her role in the memo. The photograph in question depicts a Navy sailor kissing a woman on V-J Day in 1945, a moment that symbolizes the end of World War II and has become an iconic image in American history.
The memo cited concerns about the photo not fostering a “more trauma-informed environment that promotes psychological safety” due to its depiction of a non-consensual act. However, Veterans Affairs Secretary Denis McDonough ultimately overrode the memo, stating that it should not have been sent out and has since been rescinded.
Despite calls for Nelson’s removal, McDonough defended her, highlighting her dedication to serving veterans. The controversy surrounding the memo has sparked a larger conversation about the importance of preserving historical images and the need to balance sensitivity with historical accuracy.
