NASCAR driver Daniel Suarez becomes American citizen in emotional ceremony

Mexican-born NASCAR driver Daniel Suarez took a significant step in his life by becoming an American citizen in a touching naturalization ceremony held in Charlotte, North Carolina. The event was attended by nearly 50 people, including NASCAR president Steve Phelps and members of the Trackhouse Racing team, as well as Suarez’s fiancee.

Suarez, who was taken by surprise by the turnout, expressed his gratitude for the support he received during the ceremony. “The most special part of everything was, you see so many people there,” Suarez said. “I was not expecting it. I was not expecting to see so many people.”

The decision to pursue citizenship was not initially on Suarez’s radar, as he had been focused on his racing career. However, after 12 years in the United States, he felt it was the right time to solidify his ties to the country. “I felt like it was the right time to start this process. Slowly, I’m getting more and more responsibilities in my life. It was the right time to feel more secure; that I belong here,” Suarez explained.

Despite the unexpected turn of events, Suarez’s journey to citizenship was a deliberate and thoughtful process that he began six years ago. His dedication to the process was evident as his team even quizzed him ahead of his citizenship test in April.

Suarez, who has two career Cup wins under his belt, including a historic victory at Atlanta Motor Speedway, now looks forward to embracing his new status as an American citizen. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
