President Biden’s State of the Union Address Criticized for Partisan Tone

President Biden’s recent State of the Union speech has come under fire from prominent political pundits for its highly political nature, with some going as far as to liken it to more of a campaign speech rather than an overview of the state of the country.

During his speech, Biden criticized former President Donald Trump multiple times, a move that was deemed unprecedented and overly partisan by critics.

AEI Senior Fellow and former speechwriter for President George W. Bush, Marc Thiessen, took to social media to express his dismay, stating, “Attacking his opponent directly in the first minutes of his speech is unprecedented and perhaps the most partisan start to a State of the Union address in modern memory.”

Georgetown Law Professor Randy Barnett also weighed in, questioning if there has ever been a State of the Union speech as openly partisan as Biden’s, where the President repeatedly attacked his predecessor and potential rival.

Conservative radio host Mark Levin labeled the speech as “cheap and tawdry,” while former White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer described Biden’s delivery as “odd” and “weird.”

Criticism also came from Rep. Scott Perry, who accused Biden of giving a campaign speech instead of a State of the Union address, and Fox News Chief Political Correspondent Brit Hume, who noted the lack of focus on foreign policy and the overall angry tone of the speech.

In response to the backlash, White House Deputy Press Secretary Andrew Bates defended Biden’s speech, stating, “All I hear when they say that is, ‘the President hit a grand slam and rendered us incapable of mewing about his birthday again.'”

The divisive nature of Biden’s State of the Union address has sparked a heated debate among political commentators and observers, with opinions split on the appropriateness of the President’s approach.
