Controversial Painting of Naked Woman in Shop Window Sparks Police Warning

A painting of a naked woman displayed in the front window of a high street shop has caused quite a stir in the small town of Hay-on-Wye. Gallery owner Val Harris of The Chair gallery found herself at odds with the police after they warned her that the painting could be considered a public order offence.

The artwork, created by artist Poppy Baynham, features a naked woman wearing cowboy boots with her legs spread, revealing a black triangle with pink wool on top. Despite the painting not showing explicit genitalia, it has still sparked outrage among some members of the public who have labeled it as “pornography”.

Ms. Harris, however, stood by her decision to display the painting, citing its proportions as one of the reasons for choosing it for the window. She even placed a sign next to the painting inviting passers-by to share their views in a visitor book.

The controversy surrounding the painting has not only caught the attention of the local community but has also garnered national interest. Poppy Baynham herself stated that the backlash has actually helped improve her profile as an artist.

While some have criticized the painting as inappropriate or lewd, others have defended it as a form of art. Jessie Dixon from Hay described it as exciting and playful, while Dawn Lewis stated that she didn’t find it offensive personally.

Despite the mixed reactions, Ms. Baynham remains unfazed and sees the controversy as an opportunity for her work to be seen and heard. She even mentioned that the collection, along with the comments it has generated, will be the basis of her final year dissertation at her art college in London.

The painting is still up for sale, and Ms. Baynham is open to offers. As the debate continues to unfold, it seems that this provocative piece of art has certainly made a lasting impression on the town of Hay-on-Wye.
