Coldplay Announces Plans for Most Eco-Friendly Album Yet

Coldplay, one of the world’s biggest-selling bands, has revealed their ambitious plans to create the most eco-friendly album to date with their upcoming 10th record, Moon Music.

The band announced that each vinyl copy of the album will be pressed onto discs made from nine plastic bottles, recovered from consumer waste. Additionally, a special “notebook” edition will be comprised of 70% river plastic, sourced from the Rio Las Vacas in Guatemala.

By using these sustainable materials, Coldplay aims to reduce carbon emissions by 85% and prevent the manufacture of more than 25 metric tonnes of virgin plastic. This move is part of the band’s ongoing commitment to making rock music more environmentally friendly.

Vinyl records have seen a resurgence in popularity in recent years, with sales reaching a 20-year peak in the UK. However, the material used to create vinyl, PVC, is a by-product of the oil industry and can take up to 1,000 years to decompose in a landfill.

Other artists, such as Billie Eilish, Idles, and Holly Humberstone, have also made efforts to reduce the environmental impact of vinyl production by using recycled or eco-friendly materials.

In addition to the eco-friendly vinyl, Coldplay will release CD editions of Moon Music on a new format called EcoCD, created from 90% recycled plastic with a 78% reduction in emissions compared to traditional CD manufacture.

Moon Music, set to be released on October 4, 2024, will mark Coldplay’s 10th album and will feature a collaboration with Swedish pop producer Max Martin. The first single, feelslikeimfallinginlove, is scheduled for release on June 21, ahead of the band’s headline performance at Glastonbury.

Fans can expect a visually stunning music video for the single, shot at the ancient Roman theatre, the Odeon of Herodes Atticus in Athens, Greece. The video reportedly cost €3 million (£2.5 million) to produce, making it one of the most expensive music videos of all time.

With their innovative approach to sustainability and music production, Coldplay is setting a new standard for environmentally conscious artists in the music industry.
