Coco Gauff’s Emotional Ouster in Paris Olympics Singles Tennis Tournament
Coco Gauff, the young tennis sensation, suffered an emotional defeat in the Paris Olympics singles tennis tournament on Tuesday. The 17-year-old fell to Croatia’s Donna Vekić in straight sets, 7-6 (7), 6-2, leaving her in tears after a heated argument with the chair umpire.
The incident occurred two games from the end of the match when a ruling by the chair umpire sparked a dispute between Gauff and the official. Vekić’s return on a serve from Gauff was initially called out by a line judge, but the chair umpire overruled the call, awarding a point to Vekić, who took a 4-2 lead at that point.
“I never argue these calls. But he called it out before I hit the ball,” Gauff expressed her frustration to the chair umpire. “It’s not even a perception; it’s the rules. I always have to advocate for myself.”
Despite initially holding a 4-1 lead over Vekić in the first set, Gauff was unable to maintain her advantage, eventually losing in a tiebreaker. Vekić capitalized on the momentum and secured the victory.
However, it’s not the end for Gauff, the reigning U.S. Open women’s champion. She is still competing in the women’s doubles with Jessica Pegula and mixed doubles with Taylor Fritz.
