CMAT, the Irish star who recently played at Big Weekend shortly after being nominated for best album at the Ivor Novello Awards, has spoken out against body shaming and online abuse. In a recent Instagram clip, she ripped off her shirt to reveal a more tight-fitting outfit during her set on Sunday afternoon. However, the comments on the post turned negative, with many calling her “fat”.
In response, CMAT took to social media to address the issue, stating, “I didn’t realise it was illegal to have a huge ass!” She defiantly added, “I am guilty as charged. It is time to lock me up and throw away the key.” The country-pop singer, whose real name is Ciara Mary-Alice Thompson, has been nominated for various awards and has received critical acclaim for her music.
Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident in the music industry. Female artists often face constant comments about their weight and appearance, leading to anxiety and self-doubt. Victoria Beckham recently opened up about how tabloid coverage of her figure affected her confidence, while other artists like Jorja Smith and Charli XCX have also faced similar criticism.
The issue of online abuse and body shaming has prompted initiatives like Change The Tune by BBC 6 Music, aimed at combatting discrimination and promoting a more positive online environment for artists. It is clear that more needs to be done to address these harmful behaviors and support artists who are subjected to such negativity.
