Climate activist protesters have caused chaos at Cologne-Bonn Airport in Germany by gluing themselves to a runway, leading to the suspension of all flight operations. The group, Last Generation, stated that five people had glued themselves to the tarmac in an effort to block air traffic and demand a global agreement to exit oil, gas, and coal by 2030.
As a result of the protest, inbound flights have been diverted to nearby airports, and dozens of outgoing flights have been delayed or canceled. Last Generation also mentioned that similar protests were planned at airports across Europe and North America on the same day.
This incident is not the first of its kind in Germany, as in May, Munich Airport experienced a similar disruption when six climate protesters glued themselves to a runway, leading to flight diversions and cancellations. The aftermath of the Munich incident prompted Germany’s Interior Minister to announce a review of security measures at the airport.
The actions of these climate activists highlight the growing concern and urgency surrounding climate change issues, as they continue to push for more significant global action to combat the climate crisis. Passengers traveling through Cologne-Bonn Airport are advised to check their flight status before heading to the airport due to the significant disruption caused by the protest.
