The United States Supreme Court justices’ financial disclosures for the past year were made public on Friday, revealing some interesting details about their income and gifts received.
Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson was gifted Beyoncé tickets valued at over $3,700 for the singer’s concert. Meanwhile, Justice Clarence Thomas disclosed two trips gifted from major GOP donor Harlan Crow, including one to Bali and one to California. The California trip was to a “private club,” possibly Bohemian Grove, a club for wealthy and powerful men. Food and lodging for both trips were gifted to Justice Thomas, but the exact monetary value was not disclosed. ProPublica reported that the Bali trip may have cost as much as $500,000.
Justice Brown Jackson also disclosed making over $893,000 for a book advance for a yet-to-be-released memoir, while Justice Kavanaugh received $340,000 for a forthcoming “legal memoir.”
The reports cover the 2023 year and were made public for eight of the nine justices, with Justice Samuel Alito requesting a 90-day extension for his report. Supreme Court justices are required to file disclosures of gifts annually.
This release of financial information comes after Justice Thomas faced criticism earlier this year for not disclosing the trips gifted by Mr. Crow. The scrutiny of this omission led to similar criticism of other justices last year. It seems that the financial disclosures of the Supreme Court justices continue to be a topic of interest and controversy.
