Chicago Sky guard Chennedy Carter found herself in the middle of controversy once again during a recent game against the Connecticut Sun. In the first quarter of the game, Carter was assessed a flagrant foul after making contact with her former teammate Marina Mabrey.
The incident occurred when Carter was playing defense in the post and Mabrey spun into her. Carter hit Mabrey on the arm and appeared to smack her in the face in an attempt to block the shot. Mabrey was left on the floor in visible pain, and the training staff had to attend to her.
Referees reviewed the play and upgraded the foul to a flagrant-1. This is not the first time Carter has been involved in such incidents this season, as she has now committed four flagrant fouls.
Mabrey had requested a trade from the Sky earlier in the season, and tensions seemed to be high between her and some of her former teammates. A social media video even showed Mabrey’s former teammates giving her the cold shoulder during a pregame shootaround.
The Sun went on to defeat the Sky in the game, adding to Chicago’s struggles since returning from the break for the Paris Olympics. Carter’s actions on the court have once again sparked debate and discussion among fans and analysts.
