Sub Club Celebrates 30 Years of Subculture with Longest-Running House and Techno Night
Glasgow’s iconic Sub Club is celebrating a milestone this year as it marks three decades of its legendary Saturday night Subculture slot. The club, known as the beating heart of the Scottish clubbing scene, has become a revered institution in Glasgow and beyond, thanks to the dedication of resident DJs James ‘Harri’ Hannigan and Domenic Cappello.
The duo, who have been at the core of the Jamaica Street venue since 1994, have created a loyal following that extends far beyond the city limits. “We used to joke when we’d go away that there’s always someone who’ll come up with a Sub Club T-shirt and a Sub Club tattoo,” says Domenic. “Pretty much everywhere you go people have heard of the Sub Club.”
Subculture, the world’s longest-running weekly house and techno night, has been a staple for clubbers for three decades, offering a space for music lovers to come together and dance the night away. Harri and Dom’s passion for discovering new music has kept the night fresh and exciting, with a mix of classics and cutting-edge tracks that keep the crowd coming back for more.
The recent 30th anniversary celebration saw old staff and familiar faces return to the club, highlighting the sense of community and family that has been cultivated over the years. “It’s like a big family,” says Domenic, reflecting on the special bond that exists between the DJs, staff, and club-goers.
As Sub Club continues to thrive and evolve, Harri and Dom remain committed to pushing boundaries and staying true to their roots. “Getting to play in the same place for 30 years playing new music, it’s a bit of an anomaly,” says Harri. “You feel like you’re skating on thin ice a wee bit, but it’s pretty good fun.”
With their unwavering dedication and passion for music, Harri and Dom have created a legacy that has stood the test of time. As they continue to spin records and bring joy to clubbers every Saturday night, the Sub Club remains a shining beacon in the world of electronic music, proving that good music and a strong sense of community can transcend time and space.
