U.S. Cardinal Timothy Dolan Runs for Shelter During Iran Missile Attack on Israel
U.S. Cardinal Timothy Dolan found himself seeking shelter in Bethlehem as Iran launched a missile attack on Israel while he was visiting the region. The Archbishop of New York is in Israel to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Catholic Near East Welfare Association (CNEWA), of which he is the chair.
Cardinal Dolan began his tour in Jerusalem on Friday and arrived in Bethlehem on Saturday, just as the missile attack occurred. Despite the tense situation, Dolan expressed gratitude for the safety he and his companions experienced during the attack.
On Sunday, Dolan led mass at the Our Lady of Peace chapel in the Notre Dame of Jerusalem Center near Bethlehem. Following the mass, he met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and other government officials in Ramallah on the West Bank.
Dolan’s trip was planned prior to recent escalations in the region, including Hamas’ attack on Israel and subsequent conflict. Despite the challenges, Dolan remains committed to fostering dialogue and peace in the region.
The attack on Israel by Iran marks a significant escalation in hostilities between the two countries. The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that U.S. military forces destroyed 80 drones and at least six ballistic missiles during the attack.
As tensions remain high in the region, Pope Francis has called for a halt to actions that could further escalate violence. Dolan’s visit to Israel and Palestinian-controlled territories will continue as planned, with meetings scheduled with various religious and political leaders.
Overall, Cardinal Dolan’s presence in the region serves as a symbol of hope and dialogue in the midst of conflict and uncertainty.
