Call for Bedfordshire Police to withdraw from TV show that criticizes Luton

The town of Luton is at the center of a heated debate as Luton Borough Council has called for Bedfordshire Police to cut ties with the popular television show 24 Hours In Police Custody. The council claims that the show, which primarily follows the Bedfordshire force as it investigates crimes in the town, is damaging Luton’s reputation and perpetuating negative stereotypes.

In a leaked draft letter, the council urges the chief constable and the police and crime commissioner to end the force’s participation in the Channel 4 program, describing it as a “kick in the teeth” that fuels “Luton-bashing”. The council argues that the negative portrayal of the town on national television affects the community’s sense of identity and limits opportunities for residents.

However, Police and Crime Commissioner John Tizard defended the show, stating that it serves as a platform to educate, build trust, and showcase the important work of police officers in keeping the public safe. Tizard emphasized that the show has helped raise awareness of issues such as male violence against women and girls and has encouraged vulnerable victims to come forward.

The council’s concerns have sparked a wider discussion about the impact of the show on Luton’s image and reputation. While some acknowledge the positive publicity the program brings to the police force, others believe that it reinforces negative stereotypes about the town.

As the debate continues, Chief Constable Trevor Rodenhurst and PCC John Tizard have committed to listening to all views before making a decision on the future of the show’s involvement with the Bedfordshire force. Channel 4 has been approached for comment on the matter.
