This generous act was prompted by a memecoin project called Neiro on Ethereum (NEIRO), which airdropped 4% of its total supply to Buterin in an attempt to gain attention. After selling off the tokens, Buterin was approached by the NEIRO team, who requested that a portion of the proceeds be donated to a stray dog shelter.
