President Biden delivered a powerful message to Black voters in Atlanta on Saturday, warning them of the threat he believes former President Donald J. Trump poses to the future of the country. At two campaign events, President Biden urged voters to see the upcoming election as a choice between protecting democracy or letting it backslide.
This message was a preview of the speech President Biden was set to deliver at Morehouse College on Sunday, a historically Black institution that has been divided over his invitation due to the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
President Biden emphasized the importance of defeating Mr. Trump, stating, “We cannot let this man become president. We have to win this race, not for me but for America.” Despite his efforts to paint Mr. Trump as an unstable force seeking revenge on his enemies, recent polls show President Biden trailing in several battleground states, including Georgia.
In an attempt to sway voters, President Biden focused on the potential consequences of a Trump presidency, calling him “unhinged” and referencing a recent interview where Mr. Trump reportedly expressed interest in becoming a dictator on day one.
Addressing concerns about his own low approval ratings, President Biden dismissed the polls, pointing to actual election results as a more accurate measure of voter sentiment. He also noted that Nikki Haley, who is no longer in the race, had taken votes away from Mr. Trump in primary elections.
“It’s not about me,” President Biden told supporters in Atlanta. “It’s about the alternative as well.” With the election approaching, President Biden is making a strong appeal to Black voters to consider the implications of a second Trump term on the future of the country.
