The Estate of L.S. Lowry is set to come alive in Berwick-upon-Tweed as people are being encouraged to dress as characters from one of the artist’s iconic paintings. The event, inspired by Lowry’s 1938 painting of Bridge Street in the town, aims to celebrate the artist’s connection to the area and coincide with an exhibition of his work at the Maltings Arts Centre.

Jonathan Macfarlane, a local business owner, came up with the idea after a successful “Brighter Berwick Day” where people wore colorful outfits around town. He hopes that by dressing up as characters from Lowry’s paintings, the event will bring the community together and create a fun and festive atmosphere.

Lowry, known for his depictions of working-class life in northern England, was a regular visitor to Northumberland and had a special connection to Berwick-upon-Tweed. The event on Bridge Street, scheduled for September 6th, is expected to draw a crowd eager to pay tribute to the artist and learn more about his ties to the town.

James Lowther, head of visual arts for the Maltings Trust, expressed excitement for the event, calling it a great opportunity for people in Berwick to explore Lowry’s legacy. With the exhibition already proving to be a success, the event promises to be a unique and engaging way to honor the renowned artist’s work.
