Olivier Rousteing, the creative director of Balmain, has found inspiration in South Africa for his latest collaboration with Disney to celebrate the 30th anniversary of “The Lion King.” Despite being a long way from home in Paris, Rousteing feels a deep connection to the country due to his African heritage.

The collection, influenced by African textiles and patterns, features ready-to-wear and couture pieces that reflect the iconic characters and themes of the beloved film. The limited-edition garments, including zebra-stripe coats and bustier gowns, were showcased in a short film shot near Cape Town, featuring models from across Africa.

This collaboration between Balmain and Disney marks the first of its kind, with items starting at $450 and couture pieces available upon request. The collection will be available at Balmain stores and select department stores starting July 8, offering fans a unique way to engage with the classic movie.

In addition to the fashion collaboration, “The Lion King” is celebrating its milestone year with various initiatives, including a live anniversary concert and plans to rerelease the animated film in theaters. Tasia Filippatos, president of Disney’s consumer products division, highlighted Rousteing’s personal connection to the film as a key factor in the collaboration’s success.

For Rousteing, this project is not just about fashion but also about sharing new cultures and landscapes with a wider audience. By staying true to the house’s heritage while embracing new collaborations, Balmain continues to evolve and remain relevant in the ever-changing world of fashion.
