Scottish songwriter Kim Carnie recently opened up about keeping her same-sex relationship a secret for six years out of fear of causing upset. The Gaelic singer of the year shared that it was a relief to finally come out with the full support of her family and friends.

Carnie’s experience has inspired a new international film titled “Kim Carnie Out Loud,” which sheds light on the stories of individuals in the LGBTQ+ community who have hidden their sexuality. The film, set to premiere in the UK later in Glasgow, features vulnerable and powerful narratives from people around the world.

Growing up in Oban and now residing in Glasgow, Carnie is known for her work as the lead singer in Scottish traditional music group Mànran and folk collective Staran. She has been recognized for her talent, winning the Gaelic singer of the year award at the 2021 Scots Trad Music Awards and contributing to soundtracks for popular productions like Netflix’s “Outlaw King” and “Black Mirror.”

Reflecting on her past, Carnie shared that she and her partner kept their relationship a secret from friends and family from the ages of 16 to 22 due to concerns about traditional values and potential rejection. However, after coming out, Carnie found immense support from her loved ones, who accepted her without hesitation.

The idea for “Kim Carnie Out Loud” emerged during Carnie’s collaboration with producer and director Maureen MacLeod on a documentary project for the BBC in Glasgow. The film, which has already garnered international recognition and awards, features stories from individuals across the globe, highlighting both the joy and challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community.

Carnie emphasized the importance of creating a safe space for individuals to openly express their sexuality, acknowledging her own privilege in being able to do so in a supportive environment. As the film prepares for its UK premiere, Carnie hopes to continue spreading awareness and understanding of the diverse experiences within the LGBTQ+ community.
