The Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) is currently investigating a tragic incident that occurred at Smith State Prison in Glennville. According to officials, inmate Jaydrekus Hart fatally shot prison employee Aureon Shavea Grace before turning the gun on himself.

Hart, who was serving time for voluntary manslaughter, carried out the murder-suicide in the early hours of Sunday morning. Grace, a 24-year-old woman working in the prison’s kitchen, was shot by Hart at around 4:30 a.m. She was declared dead at the scene, while Hart was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead shortly after.

The GDC stated that they are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. Hart, who was scheduled to be released in June 2043, was in possession of the weapon used in the shooting while behind bars.

Authorities have not yet provided details on how Hart obtained the gun, but GDC Special Agents are on the case and providing support to the facility. Updates on the investigation will be provided as more information becomes available.

This tragic event has raised questions about safety and security measures within the prison system, and the GDC is working to ensure that a thorough investigation is carried out.
