A Chicago-area man was arrested over the weekend for allegedly kidnapping a Wisconsin woman in February after lying about a flat tire, authorities said Monday. Jonatan Luna-Carrasco, 28, of North Chicago, was linked to the abduction that occurred on Feb. 25, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident unfolded when the woman and her friend from Whitewater, Wisconsin were driving home from a nightclub in Waukegan, Illinois. Luna-Carrasco pulled up beside them on U.S. Route 41, claiming they had a flat tire. He offered to help change the tire and encouraged the woman to stay warm inside his car. However, once she entered the vehicle, Luna-Carrasco allegedly fled with her against her will.
The victim managed to escape by jumping out of the car in Gurnee and seeking help from a nearby home. Law enforcement used Flock camera technology to track down Luna-Carrasco’s vehicle, leading to his arrest on March 30 in Waukegan. He is currently held in the Lake County Jail pending a court hearing.
Authorities suspect Luna-Carrasco may have been involved in other kidnapping cases in the past. Lake County Sheriff John Idleburg commended the police work that led to the arrest, emphasizing the importance of leveraging technology in investigations.
