Senior Australian Journalist Forced to Leave India After Reporting on Sikh Separatism

Avani Dias, the South Asia correspondent for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, recently revealed on social media that she was effectively pushed out of India after her reporting on Sikh separatism angered the Indian government. Dias accused the authorities of hindering her from attending events, trying to have her reporting removed, and delaying the renewal of her visa for weeks.

The controversy began when Dias produced a television segment on accusations that India was involved in the killing of a Sikh activist in Canada. The segment, which explored the movement advocating for a separate Sikh state called Khalistan, was met with backlash from Indian officials. Dias detailed how she and her crew faced obstacles while filming in Punjab and Pakistan, with Indian officials revoking their permission to film without explanation.

Following the broadcast of the documentary, the Indian government successfully had YouTube block the video in India. Dias was then informed that her application for a visa extension would not be approved, citing that her reporting had “crossed the line.” After lobbying by the Australian government, Dias was granted a temporary visa extension at the last minute. However, she ultimately decided to leave India, stating that it had become too difficult to do her job in the country.

The Indian government has disputed Dias’ account, claiming that she was assured her visa would be renewed. They also accused her of violating the terms of her previous visa by attempting to film at the India-Pakistan border without proper permission.

Dias’ departure adds to growing concerns about press freedom in India, where journalists have faced increasing pressure from the Modi administration. Foreign journalists, including French correspondent Vanessa Dougnac, have also reported facing challenges and threats to their residency permits for their reporting on sensitive issues.

As India’s parliamentary elections continue, the incident involving Dias highlights the challenges faced by journalists reporting on contentious topics in the country.
