The tragic story of a Texas teenager allegedly killed by an illegal immigrant with a criminal history has sparked a call for stricter laws to prevent offenders from being given leniency with probation.

Rafael Govea Romero, a 24-year-old illegal immigrant from Mexico, is accused of stalking and stabbing to death 16-year-old Lizbeth Medina in her Edna apartment in December 2023. Romero was reportedly on probation for a burglary in Schulenburg, Texas, and Edna police believe he may also be tied to a burglary at Lizbeth’s home prior to her killing.

The aunt of the victim, Ana Medina, is demanding justice and stricter consequences for those with violent tendencies. She questions why offenders like Romero are given second chances while others with lesser offenses are not. Ana emphasizes the need for tighter restrictions on probation and harsher penalties for habitual felons.

Romero, who pleaded not guilty at a recent hearing, is facing capital murder charges. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has lodged an immigration detainer against him following his arrest.

The family of Lizbeth is still reeling from the tragedy, with her mother Jacqueline discovering her daughter’s lifeless body in their bathtub. Despite the pain and heartache, Ana stands by her sister and vows to fight for justice for Lizbeth.

As the case unfolds, the community is left grappling with the devastating impact of violent crimes committed by individuals with criminal histories. The call for stricter laws and consequences resonates as the quest for justice for Lizbeth continues.
