Tragedy Strikes as Stage Collapses During Presidential Campaign Event in Northern Mexico
A stage in San Pedro Garza García, a suburb of Monterrey in the state of Nuevo León, collapsed on Wednesday night during a campaign event for a local candidate, leaving at least six people dead and 56 others injured. The event was attended by progressive candidate Jorge Álvarez Máynez and members of the Citizens’ Movement party.
The collapse was caused by a gust of wind, according to President Andrés Manuel López Obrador of Mexico. Miguel Treviño, the mayor of the city, confirmed the deaths and injuries in a video message, stating that all the injured individuals had been taken to hospitals for treatment.
The stage, which had been set up on a baseball field, was hosting a campaign event for Lorenia Canavati, the Citizens’ Movement party’s candidate for the city’s mayoral election. The party announced the cancellation of all scheduled events for Thursday due to the severe weather conditions.
Despite the tragic incident, both Jorge Álvarez Máynez and Lorenia Canavati reassured the public that they were safe and working with authorities to determine the cause of the collapse and provide support to the victims.
Mexico’s meteorological service had warned of strong winds and possible tornadoes in Nuevo León and nearby states on Wednesday evening. Governor Samuel García urged people to take cover from the storm, emphasizing the severity of the weather conditions.
The upcoming general election in Mexico on June 2 has added significance to the incident, as Citizens’ Movement party’s candidate, Jorge Álvarez Máynez, is positioning himself as a third-party alternative to the front-runners. The ruling Morena party’s coalition and the opposition’s candidates are also vying for the presidency and other political positions.
As investigations into the stage collapse continue, the community mourns the loss of lives and hopes for a swift recovery for those injured in this tragic event.
