Con artist turned reality TV star? Anna Delvey, the infamous scammer whose life story inspired the Netflix series Inventing Anna, has signed up to be a contestant on Dancing With The Stars, the US version of Strictly Come Dancing.
In recent years, Delvey, whose real name is Anna Sorokin, has gained notoriety for pretending to be a wealthy socialite in New York City. She was found guilty in 2019 of theft of services and grand larceny, having scammed over $200,000 from banks and luxury hotels by posing as a wealthy heiress with a non-existent trust fund.
Despite her criminal past, Sorokin has now joined the star-studded cast of this year’s Dancing With The Stars. Alongside her, viewers can expect to see two Team USA Olympians, rugby player Ilona Maher and gymnast Stephen Nedoroscik, as well as actress Tori Spelling, Oscar nominee Eric Roberts, and Real Housewives of Atlanta star Phaedra Parks.
Sorokin will be paired with professional dancer Ezra Sosa on the show, where she will have the chance to showcase her dance skills and win over the audience.
Her story first gained international attention in 2018 after a feature in New York Magazine, which was later adapted into the Netflix series Inventing Anna, with Sorokin portrayed by actress Julia Garner. Despite being paid $320,000 by Netflix for the rights to her story, Sorokin was unable to keep all the money due to New York laws preventing criminals from profiting from their crimes.
“I never asked for Netflix to buy my story, it just happened,” Sorokin said in a 2021 interview with the BBC. “And everything else, it just spun out of my control.”
With her past behind her, Sorokin is now ready to step onto the dance floor and show the world a different side of herself on Dancing With The Stars. Viewers will have to tune in to see if this con artist can dance her way to redemption.
