The iconic items from the archives of legendary singer Amy Winehouse and rock icon Marianne Faithfull are set to go under the hammer at Sotheby’s inaugural popular culture auction.
Among the treasures up for grabs are handwritten lyrics by Winehouse, including a hidden track from her debut album Frank and unreleased songs Like Smoke and Knights Before. The auction will also feature a personalised bowling shirt worn by Winehouse, embroidered with “Amy Civil” in reference to her marriage to Blake Fielder-Civil.
Singer Tyler James, one of Winehouse’s closest friends, is bringing these items to auction, stating that he wants to share them with fans and give back in honor of the late singer. The auction will also include a five-page manuscript with doodles of hearts and a pin-up girl, adding to the allure of Winehouse’s personal collection.
On the other hand, Marianne Faithfull is offering up items from her personal collection, including handwritten lyrics, Chanel jackets gifted by Karl Lagerfeld, and artwork by Anita Pallenberg. Faithfull’s collection provides a glimpse into her revolutionary impact on youth culture and her status as a bohemian rock chic icon.
Head of popular culture at Sotheby’s, Katherine Schofield, expressed her excitement at featuring these iconic British female trailblazers in the auction. The items will be available for online bidding starting from Thursday, with an accompanying exhibition at Sotheby’s New Bond Street galleries in London from 9 to 12 September.
The auction promises to be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for fans to own a piece of music history and rock and roll memorabilia from two of the most influential artists of their time.
