Conservative watchdog group, America First Legal, is taking action against the Federal Election Commission (FEC) for failing to act on a complaint regarding Joe Biden’s 2020 campaign and the debunked statement by 51 former intelligence officials. The statement claimed, without evidence, that the Hunter Biden laptop was part of a “Russian disinformation” campaign.
In response, America First Legal has filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia to force the FEC to investigate the matter. The group alleges that the Biden campaign failed to report indirect contributions from the statement, which was released just weeks before the 2020 election.
Former Obama administration CIA Deputy and Acting Director Michael Morrell testified that Biden campaign staffer Antony Blinken contacted him to draft a statement attacking the Hunter Biden laptop story. Eventually, both the New York Times and Washington Post verified the authenticity of the laptop.
The lawsuit claims that the coordination and resources used to solicit the statement were of significant value to the Biden campaign, violating the Federal Election Campaign Act. If the FEC fails to act within 60 days, the court could direct the commission to conform to the law within 30 days.
America First Legal argues that failure to report the contribution and disclose the individuals involved is contrary to the law and could have influenced the outcome of the election. The group believes that the FEC’s inaction is effectively encouraging disinformation to the public.
The lawsuit references a survey that found nearly four out of five Americans who followed the Hunter Biden laptop scandal believed that honest news coverage could have changed the election outcome. America First Legal is pushing for transparency and accountability in campaign reporting to ensure fair elections.
