Amanda Abbington, known for her role in Sherlock, has opened up about the “worst year of her life” following complaints against her former Strictly dance partner, Giovanni Pernice. In an interview with BBC Newsnight, Abbington revealed the extent of the abuse she and her family faced, including rape and death threats.

Despite the harrowing experience, Abbington expressed no regrets about speaking up, stating that she felt she had done the right thing by shedding light on the issue. The BBC recently apologized to Abbington, upholding complaints of verbal bullying and harassment against Pernice.

Abbington detailed the relentless threats she received, including a credible death threat at her place of work and rape threats against her teenage daughter. She described the rehearsal room as an “ongoing litany of being verbally abused” by Pernice, with the situation escalating over seven weeks.

While Abbington emphasized her love for Strictly, she stressed that her actions were aimed at preventing others from enduring similar mistreatment. The BBC’s response to the case is still being reviewed, with unresolved issues remaining.

Pernice, on the other hand, expressed relief that the allegations against him were not upheld, with a spokesperson stating that they are unable to comment further on the report. The BBC reiterated its commitment to addressing allegations of bullying and harassment seriously, thanking Abbington for coming forward.

As a new series of Strictly unfolds, Pernice has moved on to Italy’s Ballando con le Stelle, while the BBC has implemented new measures for the show, including chaperones in all rehearsal rooms and additional welfare producers. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of creating a safe and respectful working environment for all.
