Tragedy struck in Malaysia as two military helicopters collided midair during a training session, resulting in the death of all 10 people on board. The incident occurred at a naval base in northern Perak state as the helicopters were rehearsing for the navy’s 90th anniversary celebration.
A video circulating on social media captured the moment of the collision, showing the helicopters flying low in formation before one veered sideways and clipped the rotor of another, leading to both helicopters crashing. The wreckage was so severe that the choppers were mangled beyond recognition, making the rescue operation challenging for authorities.
Among the victims were three women and seven men aged between 26 and 41. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim expressed the nation’s grief over the “heart and soul-wrenching tragedy” and announced that an investigation would be conducted to determine the cause of the incident.
The navy revealed that seven of the deceased were aboard an AW139 maritime operations helicopter, while the other three were on a Fennec lightweight helicopter. The defense minister announced the cancellation of the anniversary celebration in light of the accident, with Friday prayers being held instead in honor of the victims.
The collision not only claimed the lives of those on board but also resulted in injuries to a swimmer in a nearby pool who was hit by debris from one of the crashing helicopters. The nation mourns the loss of the brave individuals who tragically lost their lives in the line of duty.
