The MadSoul music and arts festival in Florida took an unexpected turn on Saturday when two acts received top billing: indie-pop group Muna and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Democrat of New York.
The daylong event at Loch Haven Park in Orlando featured a unique lineup of musicians and elected Democrats, including Representatives Greg Casar of Texas and Maxwell Frost of Florida, the first Gen-Z member of Congress and founder of the festival.
Mr. Frost, a percussionist, described the festival as a way to engage people who may not typically be interested in politics, using music and arts as a platform for activism. The event featured musical performances, speeches, and opportunities for attendees to learn about community organizations and register to vote.
The festival had a nakedly partisan and progressive approach, with proceeds going to Mr. Frost’s re-election campaign and political action committees supporting causes like L.G.B.T.Q. rights and abortion rights in Florida.
Throughout the day, speakers addressed a range of political issues, including gun violence and recent laws passed in Florida. The event also saw a protest against Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, highlighting the diverse range of perspectives present at the festival.
One of the highlights of the festival was Muna’s performance, which was briefly interrupted by supporters of Palestinians demanding to be let onstage. The band, known for their support of social justice causes, eventually returned to finish their set with a surprise guest appearance by musician Phoebe Bridgers.
Overall, the MadSoul Festival successfully blended music, arts, and politics, providing a platform for activism and engagement in a creative and entertaining way.
