Title: Couple Transforms Cramped Manhattan Duplex into Spacious Family Gathering Space
Sandra Davis and Bruce Levine took on the challenge of renovating their garden-level duplex in Manhattan’s Upper West Side, turning it into a spacious 2,500-square-foot home where their entire family can gather.
After nearly a decade of living with the quirks of their original apartment, the couple seized the opportunity to purchase an adjacent triplex and combine the two spaces. With the help of architect Alexandra Barker, they reimagined the layout, creating a seamless flow from the street to the backyard.
The renovation infused the home with a new sense of style, featuring bold choices like deep blues and greens, terrazzo flooring, and wallpaper murals depicting nature scenes. Despite initial hesitations, the couple embraced the design elements and found that they added character and charm to the space.
The project, completed in May 2023 at a cost of $1.2 million, has already proven to be a success. Last Thanksgiving, the couple hosted their children and grandchildren for a holiday gathering, enjoying the newfound comfort and space of their renovated home.
The transformation of the cramped duplex into a welcoming family retreat showcases the power of thoughtful design and renovation, turning a once challenging space into a place where cherished memories can be made.
