Renowned photographer Magnus Hastings is bringing the art of drag to the forefront with his latest exhibition, “Queen.” Featuring a mix of international drag superstars and local Liverpool queens, the exhibition showcases the diversity and creativity within the drag community.
Hastings, known for his striking portraits of LGBT celebrities, took a unique approach for this exhibition by photographing 35 local drag queens in a back alley behind a gay bar in Liverpool. The result is a collection of images that celebrate the artistry and individuality of each queen.
While the exhibition includes well-known drag queens like Jinkx Monsoon and Courtney Act, it’s the images of the local Liverpool queens that are stealing the show. Queens like Pretentious Dross, who describes herself as “Liverpool’s arthouse witch,” are hoping to challenge stereotypes and show that drag is about much more than just glamorous gowns and wigs.
For Hastings, the exhibition is a way to participate in the art of drag and showcase the diversity of the community. Despite never stepping in front of the camera in drag himself, he sees his work as a form of expression and a way to celebrate the art form he loves.
“Queen” is set to open at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool at the start of the city’s Pride celebrations, giving audiences a unique glimpse into the world of drag and the incredible talent within the community.
