Despite increasing population numbers, Mexican gray wolves remain endangered and face ongoing threats

The population of Mexican gray wolves in the southwestern U.S. is on the rise, but environmental groups are warning of a genetic crisis that threatens the long-term survival of the endangered species.

According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and wildlife agencies in Arizona and New Mexico, there are at least 257 wolves roaming parts of the two states, marking the most reported in the wild since the reintroduction program began over 25 years ago. While this marks the eighth consecutive year of population growth, environmentalists are concerned that the increasing numbers will exacerbate the genetic crisis among Mexican gray wolves.

Environmental groups have been advocating for the release of more captive wolves into the wild and a reevaluation of policies that restrict the population within certain boundaries. Currently, wolves that wander beyond designated areas are captured and either returned to the recovery zone or placed in captivity.

Federal and state wildlife officials argue that genetic management using pups from captivity has shown positive results, with nearly 99 captive-born pups being placed into wild dens since 2016. However, critics point out that most of the pups placed in the wild have disappeared or died, highlighting the ongoing challenges of inbreeding and genetic diversity.

Ranchers and rural residents have also expressed concerns about the impact of the growing wolf population on their livelihoods, citing the ongoing killing of livestock by the wolves. While compensation funds are available, some argue that it is not sufficient to cover the financial losses incurred.

As the debate over the management of Mexican gray wolves continues, the future of the species remains uncertain. Environmentalists are calling for more proactive measures to address the genetic crisis and ensure the long-term survival of these endangered animals.
