Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is taking unprecedented action to crack down on spring break-related crime in popular beach towns. At least 140 state troopers, along with drones and license plate readers, will be dispatched to hot spots in south Florida to ensure law and order during the annual March madness.
Last year, Miami Beach saw two homicides, 488 arrests, including 230 felony arrests, and seized 105 firearms during spring break. Wild melees, unruly crowds, brazen shootings, and lawless behavior were captured in viral videos on social media, prompting state officials to mobilize troopers as a response.
This year, Governor DeSantis is not waiting for situations to spiral out of control before sending in state resources. The plan includes sending 60 state troopers to reinforce communities throughout South Florida, with a high concentration in Miami Beach, and additional troopers to hot spots like Daytona Beach and Panama City Beach.
Miami Beach has already implemented stringent guidelines to curb spring break chaos, including barricades, DUI checkpoints, curfews, and increased security measures. Mayor Steven Meiner emphasized a tough stance on crime, stating that spring breakers can expect an extensive police presence to maintain law and order.
The city has also made changes to parking rates, restricted entry to garages and lots after 6 p.m., and implemented security checkpoints and bag checks to enter the beach. Additional measures will be in place during peak weekends, including license plate readers, DUI checkpoints, and a ban on certain motorized vehicle rentals.
Governor DeSantis and Mayor Meiner are sending a clear message that criminal activity and mayhem will not be tolerated during spring break. The goal is to prevent problems before they escalate and ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for visitors.
