First Lady Jill Biden Hosts National Teacher of the Year at White House

In a break from tradition, First Lady Jill Biden hosted this year’s National Teacher of the Year award ceremony at the White House, honoring Missy Testerman of Rogersville City School in rural Tennessee. The event, typically reserved for foreign dignitaries, was transformed into a lavish affair with floral displays, gourmet dining, and entertainment by the U.S. Army Chorus.

Dr. Biden, a longtime educator herself, emphasized the importance of teachers and their role in shaping the future of the country. She praised the dedication and passion of teachers, calling teaching a “calling” and an “act of hope.”

Ms. Testerman, an English as a second language teacher with 30 years of experience, spoke about the privilege of teaching immigrant and first-generation American students. She highlighted the importance of public education and the opportunities it provides to students from diverse backgrounds.

The ceremony, organized by the Council of Chief State School Officers, also included 56 other teachers from across the country, as well as past winners of the award. The event showcased the Biden administration’s commitment to supporting educators and improving education policy, including measures to increase teacher pay and reform student loan forgiveness programs.

Despite facing challenges in Congress, Dr. Biden and President Biden continue to advocate for policies that support teachers and students, including free community college tuition. The event at the White House served as a reminder of the vital role teachers play in shaping the future of the nation and the importance of investing in education.
