President Biden Sparks Controversy by Calling Japan “Xenophobic” in Immigration Speech

President Biden caused a stir this week when he referred to Japan as “xenophobic” in a speech highlighting the benefits of immigration. The remarks were made during a fundraiser in Washington, D.C., where Biden emphasized the role of immigrants in the growth of the U.S. economy.

“Why is China stalling so badly economically? Why is Japan having trouble? Why is Russia? Why is India? Because they’re xenophobic,” Biden stated, suggesting that these countries’ reluctance to welcome immigrants is hindering their economic progress.

Japan and India, both important allies of the United States, were singled out by Biden, along with China and Russia, as countries facing economic challenges due to their immigration policies. The president argued that immigrants contribute to the strength of a nation and criticized those who oppose immigration.

The comments drew mixed reactions from Japanese lawmakers, with some expressing confusion or skepticism towards Biden’s stance. Mizuho Umemura, a member of the Nippon Ishin no Kai Party, highlighted the global struggle with migration issues and urged Biden to address domestic concerns before criticizing other countries.

Meanwhile, Sohei Kamiya of the Sansei Party pointed to perceived failures in the U.S. immigration system as a reason for Japan’s cautious approach. He accused Biden of meddling in Japan’s internal affairs and emphasized the need for the country to make its own decisions.

National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communication John Kirby defended Biden’s remarks, stating that the president was emphasizing the importance of immigration to the U.S. and not intending to criticize Japan or India. Kirby highlighted the strong relationships between the U.S. and its allies in the Indo-Pacific region.

The controversy sparked by Biden’s comments underscores the complex dynamics of immigration policy and international relations. As the debate continues, the role of immigrants in shaping economies and societies remains a contentious issue on the global stage.
