Iranian Rapper Sentenced to Death for Antigovernment Music

Toomaj Salehi, a dissident rapper in Iran, has been sentenced to death after releasing music in support of antigovernment demonstrations that shook the country in 2022. His lawyer, Amir Raesian, revealed that Mr. Salehi, 33, plans to appeal the court’s decision.

The global community has condemned the sentencing, with the U.S. Special Envoy for Iran denouncing it as a brutal abuse of human rights and a fear of democratic change. Human rights organizations have raised concerns about Mr. Salehi’s treatment in prison, alleging torture and warning of the possibility of execution.

Mr. Salehi was initially arrested in October 2022 for his music criticizing the government and backing protests following the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody. He was charged with “spreading corruption on earth,” a capital offense, and faced a closed-door trial without legal representation.

Despite being released from prison in November 2023, Mr. Salehi was rearrested and charged with “propaganda against the state.” The recent death sentence handed down by the Isfahan court has shocked many, with his lawyer calling it unprecedented.

Known for his outspoken lyrics on injustice and inequality in Iran, Mr. Salehi has been a prominent figure in the country’s music scene. His songs resonated deeply with Iranian youth, addressing issues such as poverty, child labor, and government corruption.

The Center for Human Rights in Iran has called for Mr. Salehi’s immediate release, emphasizing the importance of supporting free speech and dissent. The State Department has labeled him a “political prisoner” and expressed deep concern over the reports of his harsh treatment in detention.

As the case continues to garner international attention, supporters of Mr. Salehi are rallying for justice and advocating for his freedom. The fate of the rapper remains uncertain as he fights against the death sentence imposed by the Iranian authorities.
