A drone crashed into an apartment building in St. Petersburg, Russia, causing chaos and destruction early Saturday morning. According to Russian state news agency RIA Novosti, the incident was allegedly caused by Ukrainian forces targeting the building.
The attack resulted in significant damage to two buildings in St. Petersburg’s Krasnogvardeisky district, with photos showing large craters on the exterior of the apartment complex. Six residents were injured in the explosion and had to be transported to the hospital for treatment.
St. Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov ordered the evacuation of residents from the affected buildings for safety reasons. Local witnesses reported hearing a loud “pop” followed by a blaze, causing panic and confusion in the neighborhood.
The drone attack in St. Petersburg came shortly after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed a similar incident in Odesa, Russia, where eight people, including young children, were killed by a Russian drone strike. The tragic events have escalated tensions between the two countries, with both sides blaming each other for the attacks.
As investigations continue into the drone attacks, residents in both St. Petersburg and Odesa are left shaken and fearful of further violence. The international community is closely monitoring the situation as the conflict between Russia and Ukraine shows no signs of abating.
